Question (or Task)
I have a Sound which has in it two oscillators, both Sawtooths (Saw21.aif) and each fed into an Attenuate module with an !Attenuate hot parameter. They are both fed into a mixer. One of them has a phase offset setup on it using a !Phase hot parameter on a Constant fed into its frequency modulation and an
MaxMI
?
of Float pi * 2.
So far so good. The part I'm having trouble with is that I'm attempting to replicate a growly bass synth sound. I've looked at the waveform that I would like to replicate or synthesise a sound similar to (yet have more control over), and it basically looks like a sawtooth (ie negative ramp: 1 to 0, but made of sines), with the top half of another sawtooth in the middle of it. My aim here was to generate and experiment with generating a growling sound by mixing two generated sounds... the only trouble is, I can't seem to only get the top (ie first half) of a sawtooth to play. I could do this a couple of ways. What I'd basically like to do is have a sawtooth sort of play in half its wavelength, then have the other half silent, or be able to control how much it is silent for. Is there a way I could do this so I could add a sawtooth to the middle of another sawtooth to get precisely the shape I'm after? Let me know if any of this isn't clear enough.
Solution(s)
Carla responded to my question via email. Effectively, using a pulse or square wave multiplied by the main signal will cause it to cut off part of the sound... (obvious, really! ;-)) or if you want to make the waveform take up less of its "dutycycle", then you can mess with the formant control in the oscillator module. Coupled with the phase control that is present in the
MaxMI
?
of float pi * 2 trick, and one has full control over adding two different wave shapes together...
Now to go and experiment with making lots of these wave shapes added to each other :)
