Problem

After installing Kyma on my Windows XP computer, I get the following message when launching Kyma: "Please make sure your Capybara interface is properly connected to your computer."

Solution

The most likely explanation is that you have the Windows 2000 "driver information" file (rather than the driver information file for Windows XP). To verify this:
  1. Go to My Computer.
  2. Make sure that your file settings include Show hidden files.
  3. Select the INF folder within the windows folder.
  4. Choose view by detail and sort the files by date.
  5. Find a file called "OEMnn.inf" with today's date (or the date on which you installed Kyma). In other words, it will say "OEM" followed by some number (but that number will differ from system to system). If you do not know the date of installation, see Narrowing the Search below.
  6. Right-click on that file and open it with a text editor (such as Notepad), so you can read the contents. If you find the phrase "CDROM.inf" in the text, then this is a driver information file for Windows 2000, not XP.
  7. If you do not see "CDROM.inf", proceed to Windows 2000 INF was not installed.

To fix it:

  1. Delete the two files named "OEMnn.inf" and "OEMnn.pnf" (making certain to delete only the two files associated with the date on which you installed Kyma).
  2. Go to the Device Manager (in the System control panel)
  3. Right-click on the Kyma device whose name is preceded by an exclamation point and choose Update Driver
  4. Follow the procedure outlined in the Kyma Installation Guide to install the correct driver information file: Use the advanced options, have Windows look only in a specified place (which should be the Windows XP folder in the Contents folder in the Kyma X.app folder in the Kyma folder), make sure to clear the check box next to Search removeable media.

Narrowing the search: If you do not know the installation date, narrow your search for OEM files as follows: From the Start menu select Search

Then click Search

How might this have gone wrong during the installation?

The most likely step to have gone wrong is the point at which the Found New Hardware Wizard asks you to Please choose your search and installation options. At this point, it is imperative to clear the check box next to Search removeable media option and instead to check the box next to Include this location in the search. That way, you can prevent the installer from discovering the Windows 2000 files on the CD-ROM.

Windows 2000 INF file was not installed

It is possible that Windows installed drivers for only one part of the Kyma FireWire Interface. To verify this:

  1. Open the System control panel.
  2. Click on the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button.
  3. Check the list to see if there is an Other devices catagory.
  4. Click on the + sign at the left of the Other devices category to expose the devices that do not have installed drivers.
  5. If you see an entry called Kyma FireWire Interface, then Windows did not install all the drivers needed for the Kyma FireWire Interface.

To fix it:

  1. Right click on Kyma FireWire Interface and choose Update Driver from the pop up menu.
