Problem

Kyma.5 hangs just before completion of the opening sequence (the grey box appears where the 'Accept Software' terms are going to be and then it sticks). It's not a complete freeze, I can still pull down menus and if I Force Quit, the computer doesn't crash.

Solution

This is a problem of "too much memory". Unfortunately, Kyma.5 does not like having more than 1 gigabyte unused RAM when it starts up (512 MB for versions of Kyma older than 5.20). To get around this, start up some other program that takes up the excess memory beyond 1 gigabyte. You can check this in About this Macintosh... in the Apple menu.

If you do not have any applications that will use up enough memory, try duplicating SimpleText?, select it, Get info from the File menu, go to the Memory section, and set its memory use to something large enough to use up the RAM (keep in mind that the values there are in kilobytes, so multiply by 1000 the number of megabytes to use up and put it into the Preferred amount of RAM to use).

Once Kyma is started, you can quit the other application to free the RAM up.
