The office is quiet today; New Year's Day is a holiday but I find it relaxing to work here when no one else is around. I'm too mean to actually get sick but I am fighting off some virus or another, breathed in on recycled airplane air or ingested along with some tasty holiday commestible. In the airport, I got some recordings of orange alerts and extra security announcements. When people hear those announcements while waiting for their flights, they just look down at the floor with a non-expression. I wonder, are they thinking no one is going to stop me from going where I want to go and doing what I want to do? Or are they just thinking about unpacking and sleeping in their own beds tonight and hoping that their lives will remain relatively boring for at least the rest of this day?
