FAQ

1) What are the system requirements for Macintosh?
Version Mac OS Interface RAM Disk
Kyma X 10.2 FireWire 256 MB 600 MB
Kyma X >9.2 & < 10 FireWire 192 MB 600 MB
Kyma X >9 & < 10 PCI, PCMCIA 192 MB 600 MB
Kyma 5 >9.1 & < 10 FireWire 64 MB 200 MB
Kyma 5 >8 & < 10 PCI, PCMCIA 64 MB 200 MB
2) What are the system requirements for Windows PCs?
Version Windows OS Interface RAM Disk
Kyma X ME, 2000, XP FireWire 256 MB 600 MB
Kyma X 98SE, ME PCI, PCMCIA 256 MB 600 MB
Kyma 5 ME FireWire 64 MB 200 MB
Kyma 5 98SE, ME PCI, PCMCIA 64 MB 200 MB
3) What if my Windows computer doesn't have a FireWire port?
There are several inexpensive options for adding a FireWire adapter to a Windows computer. You can order a PCI-to-FireWire card from Symbolic Sound, or you can search these (representative) sites for keywords 'FireWire', '1394a', 'OHCI':

4) Does Kyma X work with older Capybaras?
Yes, it works with the Capy-LS and (except for aggregate synthesis) with the Capybara-66.
5) Will my old Sound files and Timelines open in the new version?
Yes! Kyma X is backwards compatible with Kyma.5. (Once you save files in Kyma X, you may no longer be able to open them in Kyma.5). If you have Timelines with Track inputs, you should ensure that Sounds in those tracks have replaceable inputs.
6) I already have a Flame interface. Will it work with Kyma X?
Yes, but you do have to update the firmware by 'flashing' the Flame. The flash-updating program is included on the Kyma X CD-ROM.
7) Does the Kyma PCI card work (physically and electrically) in the new Macintosh G5 slots?
While it would work in those slots, it is a moot point, since Kyma X running on Mac OS X supports the Flame FireWire interface only. (PCI and PCMCIA continue to be supported under OS 9).
8) Will Kyma run in 'Classic mode' on the Mac?
No, unfortunately, you cannot access external hardware (like PCI cards) in Classic mode. You have to boot in OS 9 in order to use the PCI card.
9) What are your future plans with respect to PCI and PCMCIA support?
In light of current trends away from PCI and PCMCIA support on the newest computer hardware platforms, we have decided to shift all of our development efforts to FireWire in the future. For that reason (and because we cannot continue to maintain 15 different hardware drivers), we will be supporting only the FireWire interface under Mac OS X, Windows 2000, and Windows XP and beyond. (You can, however, run the new Kyma X under Mac OS 9 and Windows ME using your FireWire, PCI, or PCMCIA interface.)
10) How do I get the new software?
The easiest way to order your own copy of Kyma X on CD-ROM is to proceed to our secure website.
